In conversation with Advocate Gurdeep Singh, Supreme Court of India

"Advocacy and litigation are a part of practical aspects of life. A good advocate must adapt to the ground realities of functioning of Courts."- Advocate Gurdeep Singh. Sir is an Advocate practicing in Delhi Courts.

You have been a working as an independent advocate since years now. In your opinion should litigation graduates work for a firm/senior advocate or independently?

I am Gurdeep Singh, practicing Advocate since more than 29 years in various competent courts of law. Am based in Delhi. I specialise in Writ Petitions, Petitions, Suits, Appeals, Arbitration matters, Matrimonial matters, & in drafting of any kind of legal documents. I am an Alumnus of Shri Ram College of Commerce & Campus Law Centre, Delhi University. Litigation Advocates should work under a Senior Advocate at least for 2 years & try to grasp legal acumen-ship.

What field in law according to you has the highest scope for new graduates?

Litigation has the highest scope as ultimately the arguing Counsel goes to the competent courts of law, argues the case & try to snatch Justice from the court. In litigation, l personally feel, Arbitration matters have a great future as now a days , every agreement & contract has an arbitration clause. The beauty of litigation is that it gives you a good professional income as well as professional fulfilment.

Do you think grades/marks make a huge difference in an advocate’s career?

No. Grades / Marks doesn't make any difference. Actually, Advocacy and litigation are a part of practical aspects of life. A good advocate must adapt to the ground realities of functioning of Courts. A new advocate must go to the Courts and learn about the nature and behaviour of the judges there, so that they can argue the case accordingly.

How were your law school days like?

My Law College days were very joyful & nice. I am an Alumnus of famous law college of India, Faculty of Law, Delhi University. It was very informative, insightful & meaningful. I have cemented my basics of law from my college days.

Do you provide internship opportunities to law students? What expectations do you hold from interns?

l don’t provide internships. A new law intern must be very seeking & must have a passion for law. If new intern has no passion for law, then in order to be successful in this profession will be very tough.

A word of advice for young law aspirants?

First, they should have passion for Law. They must feel joy while representing their clients. Secondly, they must be thorough about their briefs. They must study the case file very thoroughly. Thirdly, they must have a complete command over English language. Fourthly, they must learn the art of legal drafting by going through various court files. Fifthly, they should be Sincere, Earnest & Commitment towards their Profession.
