"Prioritize appropriately and rest will fall into place."- Associate Lawyer Simran Chugh. Ma'am has specialisation in business laws and works for Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas.
You have been a dedicated Associate at Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas for more than a year
now. How fruitful has your journey been so far?
Working in India's best law firm like Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas has been a great learning curve for me. I got the opportunity to work on some of the most remarkable and high-value deals which helped in broadening the horizons as a professional. My experience so far at has been thrilling and intellectually enriching. Because the stakes are always high, it has been enthralling at the same time extremely challenging.
What motivated you to choose corporate/business law as your mainstream career option?
As a matter of fact, I was never fascinated to work in corporate law initially in the formative years of college life. I am glad and thankful to ILNU in developing and structuring our courses in a manner that we have to mandatorily do internships in NGOs, trial courts, high courts, and supreme courts. It was primarily my internships which aided in eliminating the areas where I don't see myself working. I have benefitted immensely from actively participated in extra-curricular activities such as debating, arbitration, and mediation competitions and moot court competitions which helped in developing oratory and presentation skills at the same enabled in acquiring knowledge over various areas of law.
Further, it was intriguing for me to see how corporate or business sector has shown extraordinary growth in the last few decades and how the world is looking towards India as a potential partner to undertake huge transactions. The exposure and opportunities prompted me to choose this field of law.
You graduated from Institute of Law, Nirma University. Do you think NLU-tag matters?
It was certainly more challenging than it seems to grab an opportunity. I still remember the struggle we used to face in securing an internship with top tier law firms. However, it is of utmost importance to believe in yourself, keep working hard, experience every opportunity that comes your way, and keep learning as you go through the process. In the end, you will definitely achieve what you had dreamt of and all these tags will not even matter.
How were your law school days like?
It was a perfect blend of joy and hardships, with lots of memories to cherish forever.
You have done internships at Wadia Ghandy & Co., Economic Law Practices (ELP), Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. How important it is to choose internships wisely?
My internships guided in narrowing down the area of interest from the vast subject areas available. As a law student, it is of paramount importance to know which field of law interests you the most. This will not only help in choosing the specialization but also in gaining practical application of classroom knowledge, which will give you an edge in applying for jobs or universities for higher education.
A word of advice for young law aspirants?
Prioritize appropriately and rest will fall into place.
